Nightwish plagiarism claims

It seems Nightwish songwriter and composer Tuomas Holopainen has been accused of plagiarism after great similarities were discovered between the chorus’s of recent Nightwish single Eva and a song by relatively unknown Finnish artist Jukka Reinivuo called Whirlpool. Lucky, both tracks have been placed on YouTude, so we can compare the tracks come to some conclusions of our own:

Nightwish Eva
Jukka Reinivuo Whirlpool

Upon checking out Whirlpool at the above location I discovered a rather pleasing, although somewhat under-produced slice of 60’s flower power, with a chorus that does indeed sound a lot like the chorus from Eva. However, the progression of both chorus’s sound familiar to my ears, and I would guess appears in countless songs. Furthermore, the melody seems entirely consistent with Holopainen’s style in previous Nightwish releases. Therefore, I think the similarity of the melodies is a coincidence, and that the plagiarism accusations are a little excessive.

As a side note, while listening to Eva with a 60’s vibe in my head I notice that the last line of the chorus, “The Good in her will be my sunflower field”, (that does not have a melodic counterpart in the Jukka Reinivuo track) would melodically and lyrically fit very nicely in a Joni Mitchel song.
